Medical Weight Management with GLP-1 Medications
A science-based approach to sustainable weight loss
Losing weight is not always as simple as “eat less and exercise more.” For many people, appetite regulation, insulin resistance, metabolic health, hormonal factors, lifestyle, sleep and other medical conditions can make weight management challenging.
At Cosmoslim Aesthetic Clinic, medical weight management combines professional assessment, lifestyle guidance and, when appropriate, prescription medications to help patients achieve healthier and more sustainable weight-loss outcomes.

What are GLP-1 medications?
GLP-1–based medications are a newer approach to medical weight management. They work on pathways involved in appetite, satiety and blood-glucose regulation, helping many patients feel fuller and reduce food intake.
Some commonly discussed medications include semaglutide, found in brands such as Wegovy and Ozempic, and tirzepatide, found in Mounjaro. Their approved indications can differ by country and by brand, so medication selection should always be based on a medical consultation. (World Health Organization)
Wegovy, Ozempic and Mounjaro — what’s the difference?
Wegovy®
Wegovy contains semaglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist specifically developed for chronic weight management in appropriate patients.
Ozempic®
Ozempic also contains semaglutide, but its primary approved indication is the management of type 2 diabetes. Weight reduction can occur during treatment, but the brand and indication are not interchangeable with Wegovy. (NIDDK)
Mounjaro®
Mounjaro contains tirzepatide, which acts on both the GIP and GLP-1 pathways. Clinical research has demonstrated substantial weight reduction with tirzepatide, and a 72-week head-to-head trial found greater average weight loss with tirzepatide than semaglutide in adults with obesity without diabetes. (New England Journal of Medicine)

How can these medications help?
Depending on the medication and individual response, GLP-1–based therapies may:
- Reduce appetite and food cravings
- Increase feelings of fullness
- Slow gastric emptying
- Improve blood-glucose regulation
- Support reduction in body weight
- Help patients stay consistent with a structured weight-management plan (World Health Organization)
Is medical weight management right for everyone?
No. These medications are not a quick-fix or suitable for everyone.
Before treatment, a medical assessment should consider factors such as:
- BMI and waist circumference
- Medical history
- Current medications
- Blood sugar and metabolic health
- Eating patterns and lifestyle
- Previous weight-loss attempts
- Contraindications and potential side effects
Common side effects can include nausea, vomiting, constipation and diarrhoea. More serious gastrointestinal and other complications can occur, so these medicines should be used under appropriate medical supervision. (World Health Organization)
